October Update

It has been an interesting autumn, full of rain and warm temperatures. The leaves stayed on the trees for quite awhile after they had turned this year and gave the whole valley a golden mantle.

A flock of 300 or so grackles showed up to glean the remaining oats off the feild, and gave quite a display with their tight formation flying. Here is a shot of them landing in mid-field. While this would scarcely be remarkable elsewhere, large flocks of birds have only come to visit our farm since we cleaned out and mowed the fields.

Blue-jays and Whiskey-jacks joined them in the pasture to glean any undamaged kernels that made it through the steers digestive system. Pretty quickly every cow pie in the pasture had been scratched apart, scattering the clumps evenly across the land.
There have only been a few days without rain, and the ground has stayed saturated for over a month. Thursdays downpour overflowed the ditches and cut across our sideroad. Fortunately it stopped raining before much damage was done.
