Much Needed Rain!

After 6 dry weeks ( only about 1/2 inch of rain) Last night we got a substantial 2 inches! The parched ground soaked it up like a sponge. Already the pasture is greener and the lawn will need a final mowing before fall begins. This rain will ease my daily work load somewhat, because while we irrigate our veggies, it's nice to be spared the hours of daily watering for a little while.
Our green peppers are filling out, hopefully in time for the last box of the year.
We have 4 different kinds of cherry tomatoes ripening right now, maybe enough for a few shares this week, but soon we will be inundated with the super sweet little fruits.
Summer time is nearly gone, all too fast as usual. In subtle ways Fall is making itself felt now. Cool nights, shrubs and ferns starting to change color while some distinctive fall smells are beginning to float about on the nighttime breezes.
The famous Hymers Fall fair is this weekend, always a sign that school is about to begin again and marks the end of summer "vacation".
While I can't say this summer has been much of a "vacation" for me, I can say that it has been the best summer of my life. There is nothing I would rather do than grow veggies for my customers on my farm in this valley and raise my family in peace.
Thanks to all those who have made this a possibility.

This week’s recipes: Summer Squash

What do we do with Magda Squash?

This squash is a great flavour absorber, it’s also a nearly perfect food according to the Total Nutritional Quality Index. What we like to do with it is make Hot Squash Sandwich’s for lunch by sautéing the squash in a little oil in a fry pan along with a strong flavred spice (Montreal steak etc.) It dosent take much spice to flaver the whole dish and it taste great on toasted bread.

For more Recipes, consult the internet!

We would also like to take this time to remind those of you that haven’t to you to visit your farm, and thank those of you who made the journey out to Nolalu in the last few weeks. You have all made an investment in it this year, as such we would like to have you come and see what we are doing for you as the season goes on.

Thanks see you next week!

August Update (Pictoral)

This summer I haven't been the greatest at keeping good pictures flowing, finding the time has been tricky. What's happening around the garden? Potatoes are already appearing in our shares, the ears of sweet corn are starting to form, although the actual eating part is still a few weeks away.
Cherry tomatoes are doing great, we have thousands on the 250 plants.
Here we see the early crops of lettuce, chard, radishes, romaine and spinach turned in to the ground and planted to a cover crop of oats.
While down at this end of the garden the buttercrunch lettuce, new planting of mesclun, zukes, late peas, and late radishes are coming along.
A bed of baby greens for this weeks box, the seedless cucumbers, and summer squash.
Yellow snap beans, oh my goodness, there's going to be tons this year! And plenty of bees in the squash flowers. This year we have seen a lot of bees, at least in comparison to many past years, which is great news for the garden.
I'll try to keep the updates a little closer together!
